📌November 14th, 2025 Experience Sharing Lecture: ONCE A STUDENT, ALWAYS A STUDENT

📣We are pleased to invite Dr. Alagar Ramar (Ramar), who previously worked as a post-doctoral researcher at NTUST, to share his experiences of working in Taiwan and learning Mandarin.

Dr. Ramar first introduced his background: after completing his Ph.D., he began as a post-doctoral researcher at NTUST for about a year, then worked in Malaysia for a year. Later, he returned to NTUST as a post-doctoral researcher for four years before transitioning last year to the role of Project Manager at a technology firm in Tainan.

Regarding how to adapt to life in Taiwan, the speaker pointed out that since NTUST has many science and engineering students, for those planning to move into technology industries the job locations are often not in Taipei. Public transport is not as convenient as in Taipei, so having one’s own mode of transportation is a significant advantage.

He also encouraged those who get internship opportunities to seize them—such experience increases the possibility of securing a job in Taiwan, and it’s best to actively start job seeking immediately after graduation for maximum benefit.

On the topic of learning Mandarin, during his tenure at NTUST, the speaker audited Mandarin classes and, after spending several years in Taiwan, believes the best way to learn Mandarin is to make it fun! He recommended some websites and resources that make learning Mandarin enjoyable.

He also shared a humorous story of buying bananas at a fruit stand: using gestures, he indicated he wanted a single banana, whereas the vendor gestured back asking for a bunch!

He added that if you try to speak Mandarin—even a little—Taiwanese people will recognise your efforts and may respond in English or even your native language to better engage. This is a significant step forward in connecting with locals.

During the session, students asked many questions—for example, whether CVs should be bilingual and the difference between working in Acdamic area and Industries—and Dr. Ramar was very willing to share the issues he encountered and his personal experiences.

Finally, he wished everyone success in their future studies and careers. Thank you very much to Dr. Ramar for his invaluable sharing.
